I'd like to say to the previous 2 anons that the vault system (though fundamentaly flawed) is designed so that people survive whilst going through tests (though this was sometimes breached) so the vault(s) where there had been a single member of one gender or another the result of the breeding would mean that the gender majority would in fact be either culled or sent to the wasteland apon reaching appropriate age, additionaly if the original female didn't give birth to at least one female they would all die where as the vault with the single male would be more than capable of living on for many, many, many generations and the ratio of male to female would quickly level out, this is why you don't use faulty lore as a way to justify things when eventually you will corrected, however my usage of lore cannot be argued due to simple science proving the point and the fact that the vaults with a single member of one gender had almost certainly had every participant of the vault project be hand selected so that no-one would be able to break the door off or break out, meaning the majority of people in general, and as a result of this those vaults either went extinct or absorbed people from the wasteland or went out into it.

one of the vaults is made up of all men except for one woman. this is likely a mandatory breeding scenario for her. as an aside there is a vault that is the opposite of this, all women and one man (lucky bastard)
