At first: Liked the story, thought it was simple and straight forward, liked the gameplay that looked very simple
After getting settled: Really liked the story, found out my actions had consequences, different ways the story could go down, gameplay started to get more bullet hell-ish.
Endgame and replay: Really loved the story, felt way to many emotions from it, felt similar to nostalgia or something. Also found out my actions had permanent consequences that I can't change without literally modding the files, even if I restart it, and the gameplay improved my skill in nuclear throne and touhou-type games.
This is output from play-throughs of all types; pacifist, neutral, selective murder, and genocide.
It was relevant to their (the fans) interests. Most likely the same way fnaf became popular, or any other Fandom generating product is/was for that matter.

Maybe you should go to a doctor.
