When I copy the line of squares off of here and paste it into a text editor on my PC (running Linux but that shouldn't matter), Japanese characters appear.

They stay squares when pasted into a comment.

I checked, everything on my system is set to use UTF-8. Thus, possible solution: Let the comments be in UTF-8 and you can put the Japanese characters there.

(If your a looking for a way to translate the name into western characters, I can't help.)
