Dang, this is one conversation I did not expect to see here.

Anyway, to participate a bit - I'm a fan of fantasy, Tolkien doesn't write children's books only despite "The Hobbit" being very famous this year (due to obvious reasons). Favourite author - Raymond E. Feist by far. The "Riftwar Saga" is amazing. Other good reads - the classic "Song of Fire and Ice" is extremely entertaining, George R. R. Martin has a very unique style. Robert Jordan's (and his friend's who is finishing his series) "The Wheel of Time" are awesome reads with a rather "different take" on the fantasy world. (quite long tho)

The Wheel of Time is a fantastic series, I'm not a big fantasy buff, but I've really enjoyed it. I hadn't caught any major differentials between Jordan and the other writer, I don't know too many people who even heard of these books, did you notice anything? Anything that caught your eye in the middle that immediately said it wasn't Jordan's work?

Not really to be honest. I was quite surprised. Once you reach like... book 7 and beyond it gets a bit stretched out but the other author writes almost identically to Jordan so it's just Jordan's prolonging of the story rather then the other author's error or anyway.

It's a great series, I love it. :D Being crazy about Fantasy makes it so much better. :D

i don't read much fantasy. i find that (as compared to classics, which aren't all enjoyable, at least not for everyone, but still there's a reason they're classics...) there's extreme high variance.

for example a few months back i read Heroes Die by Matthew Stover. that one was absolutely great. it was not only very exciting and very different from most fantasy contentwise, but it was also very well written. it was obvious that mr. Stover knows what he's doing and that he's no stranger to literature theory and narratology.

now a few weeks ago i read the Arthas (world of warcraft) Christine Golden. the storyline was good, but that's no credit to her as about two thirds of it were transcriptions from warcraft 3 (+expansion) cutscenes. but the writing and how she put the parts of the story that were already written (by the makers of the game) was absolutely miserable. the book was complete garbage and every second page i just had to shake my head and think "this woman just has no clue what she's doing..."
note that this Arthas book was a bestseller =P
even though it was just an absolutely embarassing effort.

You should try Moorcock's Eternal Champion series, Elric of Melnibone and Hawkmoon in particular. They're pretty gloomy, but they basically codified the Dark Fantasy subgenre.

Never even heard of it, care to elaborate?

Regarding some Edgar Allan Poe talk previously in the thread - I highly recommend watching "The Raven". If you're a fan of Edgar Allan Poe you will love the movie. Even if you're not a fan you'll still probably like it.

It's simply about 2 men (One of them is mentally disabled) who work to achieve a dream farm during the early 1900's. Very excellent book.

Btw, I have read Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. I wonder why there should be a movie for such a short story.

there's probably hardly a popular classic novel/short story/long poem in existence that doesn't have a movie to it...
early movie makers seem to have been completely crazy for using literature they like for their stories ^^
