I agree with you all, I honestly thought that Goku and Bulma were going to be together at the end of the original Dragon Ball...but nope, toriyama made him marry the annoying irrelevant Chi-Chi.
So yes, it should have ended Goku X Bulma.

I too agree that these two should have been together because they were the first two characters that appeared in the beginning of Dragonball.

Bulma even said at one point that she "liked" the grown up Goku.

My reason that they should've ended up together is not because they were the first two characters, but because their chemistry played off each other so well. A naive boy from rural area with good heart and a city girl with ambition and goals.
