It makes sense the two most unlikable characters would find comfort in each other.

True. In-universe, they're perfect for each other, because they're too obnoxious (Adam)/bloodthirsty (Lute) for anyone else. I'm calling it canon. Lute only ever smiles around Adam, and she's about the only one he shows any measure of respect/admiration for.
